ROUND6

The day started early with setting tents up at 7am on a cold, wet and dark Sunday morning. The footy ground and tent site were already covered with water and mud before we even started. 2 cars and a party hire truck all got bogged between 7am to 8am. I must admit I was wondering what have I got myself in to.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank every person that got down there early to help with the tent and BBQ set up. You all know who you are and the kids and I appreciate it.

The first game of the day was at 9:20am against Blackburn Red who only two weeks ago beat us for our only defeat of the season by 11 points. I was quietly confident going into this game as Blackburn red jumped us 6 goals to 1 goal in the first quarter two weeks ago however we finished the last 3 quarters outscoring them considerably. We jumped them early and with the short 8 minute halves we were able to outscore them 2.2-14 to 0.1-1. The result of this game set the boys up and built confidence in them from the start.

Game 2 @ 11am was against Scoresby whom we had not played before. They jumped us early and controlled the ball for most of the first half until we scored late drawing the score even. To the boys credit they took my advice and decided to get their hands on the ball first and outscored Scoresby 4 goals to 0 in the last half. Newcomer Corey Anwin got the ball rolling in the second half with his second goal of the season to put us in front for good.

Game 3 was at 2pm so the boys enjoyed a sausage sizzle and some boys reportedly eating 5 sausages in bread plus a can of Sprite. Unbelievable!! I was surprised half of them could run after that effort.

We played South Croydon in Game 3 and the boys dominated from the get go kicking 3 goals to 1 in the first half and 3 goals to none in the second.

Game 4 was 20 minutes after the completion of game 3. This was the danger game. Upper Ferntree Gully beat us last year 32 goals to 0 and I knew they were a strong team. Both teams were also 3 wins 0 losses throughout this day so whoever won the last game would win the premiership. It was a tight battle with scores being level at a goal a pice at half time but the Baysie boys coming through late in the second half with the winning goal from Cameron Philpotts. His fifth of the day.

It was a quality effort by every team member and a fantastic day had by all.

Very, very enjoyable.

Go Baysie!!

We travelled out to Croydon today and I expected the ground to be wet and muddy and most of the play would be at ground level.

We started with 14 players and as Croydon only had 16 players themselves we borrowed one of their players to have an even contest.

All players started well in the wet conditions and managed to keep Croydon to only a single goal at the first break. The second quarter was real arm wrestle for us - I asked all players to stay in position and not go chasing the ball in a pack for a kick and we worked hard at getting the ball into our forwards but were unable to generate a score, the taller Croydon boys were able to outmark our small forwards and drive the ball back into the centre.

Due to the distance from the back oval to the changerooms we stayed out on the ground at the halftime break and all players were wet and cold - and more importantly enthusiastic to continue so for the third quarter we made some changes to bring our taller players into the centre ot the ground which proved to be a good decision as we definately had more of the ball than Croydon for the quarter and managed to score a few points.

For the last quarter we played some of our best defensive football for the season and kept Croydon goaless and managed to get our first major on the board - although we did not win today boys there is some real improvement in our teamwork and ball skills so we are definately on track for our first win.

Bayswater U11s travelled to Waverley Blues (Junior Ground) for Round 6. It was a cold morning, but there was no rain and the ground was in pretty good condition.

Jack Tassell was playing his 50th game, with Attila joining the club during the week and playing his first game.

We started pretty slowly, kicking 1.4 to 3.1 in the 1st quarter. Waverley Blues were getting their goals from close range, as they were moving the ball into their forward line quickly. In contrast, we moved the ball too slowly and therefore had a crowded forward line. Our forwards were not in front and Waverley were able to move the ball out of defence easily. Jaycob and Max got injured going hard for the ball, with Max sitting out the rest of the game with a leg injury.

Our 2nd quarter was much better, with both teams kicking 1.1 and a tight contest across the ground. Riley and Ben were giving us some drive out of the centre, and Josh was doing a great job in the ruck against a taller opponent. We had all the play in the 3rd quarter, but could not capitalise on the scoreboard. We were probably a bit stiff to not have a goal paid, only scoring 2 points for the quarter. Our backline had tightened up and Waverley Blues did not score in the 3rd term.

We were only 7 points down at three quarter time, but with no players to rotate off the bench after Jake C was injured in the last quarter, we seemed to run out of legs. Waverley Blues scored 4 goals in the last quarter, most from the goal square where they had numbers and we didn’t. The final score did not reflect how well we played, but there are plenty of lessons to learn from our first loss for the season. We play them again later in the season, so we will be able to measure if we have improved.

UNDER 12 MATCH REPORT ROUND 6 2011

We played South Croydon at the Bayswater Morgue today where unfortunately we were the only team playing there on the day. All day the boys were under pressure and all day they repelled attacks, chased players down and powered into the forward line. It was a low scoring affair with only a few points separating the teams and a flukish goal to South in the last quarter had them leading by more than a goal. In a last few minute frenzy the Baysie boys advanced into the forward line again and scored a point and on the kick out we regained possession and kicked into the full forward line again but South again repelled us only this time putting the ball out on the full. Unfortunately for us the siren sounded as the ball was in mid air so a Bayswater mark in the goal square was disallowed and we went down by only 8 points in a great tussle.

Good news is we are improving however I know old habits die-hard and this is why I keep repeating myself at training about the use of opposites. We must use our opposite when needed as again today players backed into trouble and the ball was turned over. As a coach I look forward to the day when I can sit back and watch you in your senior playing careers and I hope I don’t cringe because you still won’t use our opposite. Unfortunately it is seen time and time again at our senior level so boys take my advise and learn while you are still young.

Round 6 v South Croydon

Q1: Going into the game we new we could not take it easy playing the bottom side. We talked about how cocky we were against Ringwood after beating the top side at the time Scoresby the week prior. It was all about respecting the opposition and stick to our game plan. In very wet and boggy conditions we started very well and our team work was fantastic.

Bayswater 5.2.32 - Sth Croydon 0.0

Q2: The second quarter was just as good although we did kick poorly in front of goals but at times it was difficult for the guys to get through the thick mud. The players were fantastic running hard in numbers and looking for each other to switch play to keep the ball moving.

Bayswater 8.9.57 - Sth Croydon 0.0

Q3: After half time the opposition decided to try and stop us scoring by keeping most of their team flooding our forward line. It was very difficult to find space and kick goals but to the guys credit they found a way through and added another 4 goals.

Bayswater 12.14.86 - Sth Croydon 0.0

Q4: Again South Croydon tried to minimise the damage and it was a scrappy affair. It was great to watch our guys work with each other to try and knock the ball out and run to stop the opposition try and bottle the game up. We finished the game well with another 3 goals and a good win.

Bayswater 16.17.113 defeated Sth Croydon 1.1.7
