Blackburn Red V Bayswater – 1st May 2011

Bayswater U9’s travelled to Morton Park to take on Blackburn Red on Sunday morning. The game took place on the main senior ground divided into two grounds.

As Bayswater had 23 players some kids had to sit on the bench for two quarters as the other team would not allow us to make any interchange which was very unfortunate. The good news is that the kids that sat on the bench for two quarters last week will not sit on the bench for two quarters for at least the next two-three rounds. To all parents this will be on a rotational basis and I do endeavour to get all kids an even run.

The boys started the first quarter very slowly. It was to be expected though as they had a few new agenda items this game and I knew it would take some time to sink in. The new areas they wanted to focus on were manning up and punching the ball in mark contests in defence. Kicking to the hot spot and standing in front in the forward line and finally sharing the ball via handball which has been a main focus over the last two weeks.

The first quarter started and true to 7 and 8 year old form the boys forgot to do any of the above and just chased the ball around the ground, leaving their mans and positions. The result at quarter time. Blackburn 6.1-37 to Bayswater 1.1-7.

A great long goal late in the quarter from Michael Aulsebrook kept us within reach. It was a very good kick.

At quarter time the boys were reminded of the three things we wanted to do and the tide started to change.

Renan got involved in the game and got the ball forward for Bayswater whilst there were great smothers from the boys however a special mention to Bryce Cosham for his fantastic smother. It was the best of the game.

The final three quarters Bayswater got their hands on the ball first more often than Blackburn and as a result Bayswater outscored Blackburn Red 8.4-52 to 5.3-33 falling short at the end of the day by only 11 points.

There were some fantastic individual efforts but most importantly it was a great team effort for the last three quarters. Our talk on the field has become better and will be a focal point in the coming weeks and the handball to open teammates is starting to develop.

I look forward to playing Blackburn Red again. Maybe in the Lightning Premiership boys!!!!

Today the Under 10's played at home against Mooroolbark. Before the start of the game I reminded all players about our training session on Thursday where we practiced our kicking and handballs and told them as long as they concentrate on their skills and work as a team we should have a good game.

Mooroolbark had 18 players but only put 15 on the ground so with our 13 we weren't too far behind them, we played a three man forward line, five in the centre and five in defense. As Mooroolbark have a very similar jumper to us we expected them to be wearing the EFL supplied alternate strip but they had their normal jumpers on which led to some confusion in the ball ups and packs. The first quarter was tight and we managed to keep them to two goals thanks to our teamwork, tackling and kicking to our loose players.

During the second quarter it was a tight tussle and we did get the ball to our forwards though couldn't seem to trouble the scoreboard until Riley Spicer managed to scoop the ball up from a pack congestion in our forward fifty, spin round and kick a magnificent snap goal.

The third and fourth quarters were similar to the first half with Mooroolbark getting a run on using fresh players off the bench and scoring. The highlight for us in the last half was the tackling and teamwork shown by our players – they never gave up and Jayaran Dove led by example in the centre bounces winning the ball and kicking into our forward line, he ran about 25 metres to chase down one opponent and lay a great tackle winning a free kick.

A real good effort by our team considering it was only their third game and not having played over school holidays coming off the bye they showed promising signs of what they will be able to do with more training.

BAYSWATER V SCORESBY

Winners

Another good win, but it was tough going early. It was great weather for football – no rain, overcast and not too hot. Each side only scored 1 goal in the first half, with Scoresby kicking long and putting pressure on our backline. We tried some of the boys in different positions again, with mixed results. Sascha did what I asked in the Centre, putting pressure on their onballers and tackling hard. Jake C was doing well in the ruck, but we could not get clear possessions out of the centre. Our tackling and pressure was good, but our shots for goal were coming from the boundary or under pressure.

In the 3rd quarter, the game opened up and we started to get some run and carry. Drew and Kyle both kicked 2 goals for the quarter, and Max chimed in with a goal while playing at full forward. We started to bring the ball into the corridor and through the centre, with Riley dominating and Tom leading well at Centre Half Forward. Azza was back in his favourite position in the centre, and got plenty of the ball. With the ball moving quickly, our forward line was open and we kicked accurately, with 5 goals 1 behind for the quarter.

We went into the last quarter with a couple of injuries, Jack O with a sore ankle and Jake C a knock on the knee. Keeping Scoresby scoreless in the 3rd quarter, I think some of the boys thought it would be easy in the last quarter. Our foot skills were good and we hit targets around the ground, but our forward line got too congested, with everyone trying to get in on the action. Our backline and onballers did a great job in the second half, keeping Scoresby scoreless.

The boys need to keep working on the little things we continue to practice at training, but well done on another great win.

UNDER 12 MATCH REPORT ROUND 4 2011

Winners

Today we travelled to Jubilee Park to tackle Ringwood who were only the one win.

In almost perfect football conditions the 16 boys took to the field and played how they practised by placing relentless pressure on the opposition. The back line repelled many attacks and was standing firm under pressure and our midfield was giving good supply to our depleted forward line.

At quarter time we led by 3 goals to 1 and all the boys had their tails up.

In the second quarter Bayswater had most of the ball and scored 3 goals to nil so going into the main break we had a comfortable lead. The emphasis was to keep on working hard for each other and already our tackle count was into double figures with Kane laying many great tackles.

The third was a tussle and neither team kicked a goal but with us powering forward we did outscore Ringwood by a few points. The boys could now smell victory and everyone kept running hard and we kicked 4 goals to their 2 so a great first up victory for the team.

A great debut by Andrew Curry who played in the full back line, he reads the ball well and backs himself to propel the ball down the ground after a run. Well done and welcome!

I am also pleased with the efforts of a couple of boys who had the courage to use their opposite foot when needed, noticeably was Taylor when deep in the pocket and also Sam who had a snap on his left. I did also see numerous opportunities lost where boys go back into traffic and get caught rather than use their opposite either by hand or foot.

A pleasing game and to see them improve is just fantastic for me.

Round 4 v Ringwood

Q1: After having a week off due to the easter break we played Ringwood away. Things didn’t start well as some players arrived late and the attitude before the game was poor. Ringwood came to play as they ran hard and teamed up very well kicking the first 2 goals. Once again we wasted opportunities and kicked a couple of late goals to stay in touch.

Bayswater 2.4.16 - Ringwood 3.1.19

Q2: We couldn’t shake off the persistence of Ringwood and we started to play lazy football by not running to help out the backline or run to block and protect our team mates. We were down by 3 points at the main break.

Bayswater 3.6.24 - Ringwood 4.3.27

Q3: The message was simple we knew they had come to play and we had to get back to our best football to win. We started well but again wasted opportunities up forward kept Ringwood in the game and they had a sniff to win their first game for the year.

Bayswater 5.10.40 - Ringwood 6.4.40

Q4: All tied up going into the last quarter it was going to be a win for who wanted it more. We started well and kicked clear by a couple of goals but Ringwood wouldn’t go away kicking the next 2. We were in front with a couple of minutes to go but unfortunately Ringwood kicked a goal to win and a lesson was learnt by us all.

Bayswater 8.10.58 defeated by Ringwood 9.7.61
