BAYSWATER V HEATHMONT

We played our last Home and Away game at Bayswater against Heathmont, knowing we would be playing finals next week and that we had beaten Heathmont earlier in the year. Jake C was playing his 50th game, and we had Troy, Max, JJ and Blaze playing to qualify them for finals.
We kicked into the wind in the 1st Quarter, which was evenly contested. Heathmont were probably unlucky not to convert some of their scoring opportunities, and Riley got a valuable goal for us into the wind. Our run from the backline was great, and the boys were trying to kick long to our open forward line. Our boys continue to kick on their non-preferred foot when there is no other option, which is great to see.
Kicking with the wind in the 2nd Quarter, we were getting first use of the ball from the centre. When the forward line was open, we were kicking to the advantage of our team mates, and we would have scored more except for a couple of unlucky bounces. When we moved the ball slowly, and as the quarter progressed, the forward line got more crowded (making it harder to score). Another goal to Riley and a good goal from the square to Jaycob had us 2 goals up at half time.
Heathmont scored 2 goals with the wind in the 3rd Quarter, but we got another valuable goal into the wind – a great goal by Ryan. We were turning the ball over with inaccurate kicking and over-using the handball, but the boys kept battling. We were only 3 points up at three-quarter time, but we were confident with the wind in the last quarter that we could run over the top of them. Riley, Tom and Zac all scored goals in the last term, and we finished with some run in our legs leading into the finals.
We have a great opportunity in the finals, having finished the season in 2nd place (with the most wins). We know it will be a challenge, but I’m sure the boys will put in their best effort and do the club proud, regardless of the results.
