BAYSWATER V CROYDON WHITE

The under 11s were at home this week to Croydon White who are traditionally quite a strong junior club and who happen to be 3 and 3 nearing the half way stage of the season.

We entered the match again with only 18 players as young Thomas had cut his hand open quite badly and Jake was unavailable due to knee soreness and with these 2 players out we knew we were in for a tough match.

As it turns out for the first time in several weeks Croydon White had a full team which was going to make our task a little harder.

Anthony was captain for the day and he won the toss and kicked to the station end of the ground. From the very first bounce something didn’t seem right as for the first time this season we looked a little intimidated and that we hadn’t come to play, we were going to ground all the time and waiting for the ball to come to us which was very un Bayswater like.

The first ¼ was a struggle with no one gaining control and although all the boys tried hard they seemed to have a couple of boys that we couldn’t match up with or be bothered to run with and at the first change scores were level.

We had a chat at ¼ time and as we all know with young kids it went in one ear and out the other and apart from a 5 minute purple patch in the second ¼, the game was becoming a game of kick to kick. In that purple patch we managed to kick a couple of quick goals that put us up by 15 points at half time.

As we have done in every game this year no matter what numbers we have we always change the team around so everyone gets a fair go in the forward line, onball or in defence and we know that this may cost us a win one day but thats a rule both Mick and myself made prior to the start of the season.

We ventured out for the 3rd ¼ with the hope that the second ¼ form would continue and it did not take long to realise that it wont and Croydon continued to attack but to the boys credit they continue to fight tooth and nail for the ball to the point where they never want to be behind. We went in at ¾ time with a similar lead to half time but you could see the boys were getting tired due to only having 18.

The last ¼ was tense with Croydon kicking a goal and then Bayswater and then Croydon again and Croydon also kicked a few points so the score was down to 5 points the difference with only a couple of minutes left. The boys rallied once more and when we kicked another point to put us 1 goal up i thought we might be safe and when Jesse stole the ball out of Lukes hands to claim a mark in front and kick a point the game was over and we won by 7 points.

After not having a full team last year and struggling for a full team this year (thank god for basketball lol) to be 7 – 0 at the half way mark is fantastic for all the boys and if they keep trying as hard as they can and not get too cocky who knows what may happen.

BAYSWATER V ROWVILLE

Today we played Rowville at their home ground.

First quarter we came straight out and kicked the first goal, unfortunately we were very flat footed for the rest of the quarter allowing Rowville to kick 3 goals 6points to our 1 goal 2 points.

Second quarter the team started with more run which meant we were able to score 3 goals 3 points to Rowville’s 3 goals.

Third quarter was another even quarter with us kicking another 2 goals 2 points to Rowville’s 3 goals 3 points. This had us 20 points down going into the last quarter.

I told the Team going into the last quarter that everyone needed to contribute for the whole last quarter.

Fourth quarter the team came out and started to play the brand of football which they are capable of. We managed to kick another 3 goals 2 points to Rowville’s zero which had us a draw with around 4 minutes to go. Unfortunately the umpire paid a very 50/50 free kick to Rowville and then proceeded to pay it down field in the final seconds which put the Rowville player around 30m out in front of goals as the siren went. The Rowville player kicked a goal after the siren to give the win to them.

Was very proud of the way the Team once again finished of the game with some great ball movement and pressure.

Final Score

Bayswater 9-9-63 def by Rowville 10-9-69

Goal Kickers: Edgar 3, Brandon 2, Gaby 1, Kearne 1, Connor 1, Dennis 1

BAYSWATER V UPPER FERNTREE GULLY

Today we took on the undefeated Upper Gully who are the ladder leaders with us sitting in second place also undefeated. The game itself was fairly hyped up and we knew it would be a tough assignment. From the first bounce they were all over us and their skill level was tremendous. We were outscored in the first three quarters and in the last we showed some promising signs and we outscored them but poor shots on goal had us kick 2 goals 7 behinds to 1 goal.

Well we have now played all of the competition and Upper Gully is by far the favourites for the flag. They showed us up as being slow, lethargic and non committed. Where they were prepared to chase we floundered, where they bumped us off the ball we let them. Our skill level wavered under their pressure and we succumbed by dropping our heads and not putting up a decent fight. Pleasing yes is the way we did outplay them in the last quarter but the damage had been done…. Let us be prepared next time!

Remember we have UNFINISHED BUSINESS!!!
